A European clothing store owner contacted me after a two-week sourcing trip in China.
Before coming, he had already checked many suppliers online. He visited Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and Yiwu, hoping to find good clothing suppliers and better prices.
The result was not what he expected.
Some styles looked different from the photos. Some prices were obviously marked up by middlemen. Some suppliers did not want small orders. After spending money on hotels, transport, and translators, he went home without placing an order.
This happens more often than people think.
Many overseas buyers ask me:
Which city is best for wholesale clothing in China?
My answer is simple:
There is no best city. There is only the city that fits your product, budget, and order quantity.
Guangzhou: The First Stop for Most Buyers
Guangzhou is usually the easiest place to start.
You can find women’s wear, fast fashion, basics, children’s clothing, Korean-style clothing, and many export-focused suppliers.
Markets like Shisanhang, Shahe, Baima, and Zhongshan Ba are well known. The choice is wide, and prices range from low to high.
Guangzhou is suitable for online sellers, small boutiques, fast fashion buyers, and buyers who need frequent restocking.
The problem is that quality levels are mixed. You need to compare carefully, because two suppliers may sell similar styles with very different fabric and workmanship.
Hangzhou: Better for Women’s Fashion
Hangzhou is stronger in mid-range and higher-end women’s clothing.
Sijiqing Market is well known for women’s fashion. Many styles are more elegant, suitable for boutiques, office wear, and light luxury fashion.
Compared with Guangzhou, prices are usually higher. MOQ may also be less flexible.
If your customers care about fabric, cutting, and a more refined style, Hangzhou is worth checking.
Shenzhen Nanyou: Premium Clothing
Shenzhen Nanyou is not the cheapest place.
It is more suitable for buyers looking for designer-style clothing, better fabrics, and higher-end workmanship.
Many products there are closer to boutique or brand-level styles. But for new buyers, it is also easy to overpay if you do not know the market.
Nanyou is better for high-end boutiques, premium online stores, and sellers targeting customers with a higher budget.
Yiwu: Low Cost and Flexible Orders
Yiwu is good for low-cost clothing, basic styles, accessories, socks, small items, promotional products, and mixed orders.
The biggest advantage is flexibility. Many suppliers accept smaller quantities, and prices can be attractive.
But Yiwu is not the best choice if you need strong fashion design or high-end clothing quality.
It is better for discount stores, low-price platforms, and buyers who want to test many products with smaller quantities.
Changshu: Men’s Wear and Winter Clothing
Changshu is a strong base for men’s clothing, jackets, down coats, padded clothing, and winter products.
If you focus on men’s wear or seasonal outerwear, Changshu may be more suitable than Guangzhou or Yiwu.
The supply chain is mature, and the cost-performance can be good.
How I Help Buyers Choose the Right City
Many buyers waste time because they visit the wrong market first.
Before sourcing clothing from China, I usually check:
- product type
- target price
- order quantity
- quality level
- whether the buyer needs stock items or custom production
- whether the buyer sells online, in stores, or through wholesale channels
After that, I can decide which city or supplier type is more suitable.
Sometimes the answer is Guangzhou.
Sometimes it is Hangzhou or Shenzhen.
Sometimes Yiwu is enough.
Sometimes the buyer should skip the market and go directly to factories.
