Factory vs. Trading Company: How to Spot a Liar in 5 Minutes (The Video Call Ambush)

Remember the unlucky buyer who ordered furniture but received miniature toy models? (Read the horror story here).
If you don’t understand the Chinese factory ecosystem, you are gambling. You never know if the person behind the screen is a real factory owner, or just a college graduate sitting in an apartment, marking up prices by 30%.

Blind trust is expensive. Today, I will teach you how to distinguish a real factory from a middleman in just 5 minutes.

You might ask: “Why don’t factories just open their own Alibaba stores?”
The reality of Chinese manufacturing is harsh. Real factories are busy with production and warehousing. They rarely have the time or energy to manage a professional sales team.

English-speaking talent is expensive in China. A professional sales team + Alibaba annual fees + ad spend = Double the cost of a factory worker’s wage.

If the ROI (Return on Investment) is low, an in-house sales team can drag a factory down. So, many pragmatic factory bosses prefer to focus on making products and let Trading Companies handle the sales.

To cover their high office costs and team salaries, Trading Companies MUST markup the supply price. They hide this markup, pretending to be the factory. If you buy from them, you are paying for their office rent, not the product quality.

The 5-Minute Test: The “Video Call Ambush”

How do you know if you are talking to a factory or a middleman?
You don’t need to fly to China. You just need a smartphone.

During China’s working hours (check the time zone!), call them on WhatsApp or WeChat Video Call.
Do NOT make an appointment. Just call. Ask them to show you the production line right now.

If they panic and say:

  • “The boss isn’t here.”
  • “My signal is bad.”
  • “I am in a meeting.”
  • “The factory is in the suburbs; it takes an hour to drive there.”

Run away. They are stalling. They are likely driving frantically to a partner factory to pretend it’s theirs. Choosing them means paying a hidden “middleman tax.”

A real factory salesperson will say:

  • “Sure, hold on. Let me walk downstairs to the workshop.”
  • “It’s noisy down there, but I can show you.”

Why? Because in a real manufacturing setup, the sales office is usually just 100 meters away from the machines.

Leo’s Philosophy: “Water Can Carry a Boat…”

Being a middleman is not a sin. Lying about it is.
Transparency is the only way to do long-term business.

I come from the Li Family, one of the oldest clans in China.
Our family belief is “Cheng Xin” (诚信 – Integrity). Without integrity, business partners will turn against us, just like the ocean.

There is an ancient Chinese proverb:

“Water can carry a boat, but it can also capsize it.”
(Shuǐ kě zài zhōu, yì kě fù zhōu)

You (the customer) are the water. I am the boat. If I cheat you, you will overturn me.
I don’t hide markups. I charge a transparent service fee to be your eyes and ears on the ground.

🚀 Stop guessing. Start verifying.
If you are unsure about your supplier, send me their contact. I will do a “Video Ambush” for you.
