How to Tell a Real Chinese Factory from a Middleman

Many overseas buyers think they are talking directly to a factory in China.

Sometimes they are.

But sometimes the person behind the screen is only a trading company, a small office, or even one person reselling products from another supplier.

A middleman is not always bad. Some trading companies are professional and helpful. The real problem is when they pretend to be the factory, hide the real source, and add a markup without telling you.

When you source products from China, this can make your price higher, communication slower, and quality control harder.

Why So Many Suppliers Say They Are “Factories”

Real factories are usually busy with production, packing, warehousing, and delivery. Many factory owners are good at making products, but not good at English sales, online marketing, or Alibaba operation.

Building an export sales team is not cheap. They need English-speaking staff, platform fees, ads, sample follow-up, and customer service.

So in many industries, factories focus on production, while trading companies handle overseas buyers.

This is normal in China.

But if a supplier clearly says “we are the manufacturer,” then buyers have the right to verify it.

A Simple 5-Minute Factory Check

One quick way is a video call.

During China working hours, ask the supplier to show you the workshop on a live video call.

Do not only accept polished factory photos or old videos. Those can be borrowed, edited, or taken from another supplier.

A real factory salesperson can usually walk to the workshop, warehouse, sample room, or packing area. It may be noisy. It may not look perfect. But it should look real.

If the supplier keeps saying the signal is bad, the boss is away, the factory is far from the office, or they need to arrange it next week, you should be careful.

It does not prove they are a scammer.

But it does mean you need more verification before sending money.

What I Usually Check for Buyers

As a China sourcing agent, I do not judge a supplier only by what they say online.

Before I recommend a factory, I usually check several things:

  • business license information
  • factory address and company name
  • whether the office and workshop match their claim
  • product category and production ability
  • sample quality
  • communication speed
  • whether they are honest about being a factory or trading company

For some products, a trading company may still be a good choice, especially if they can manage several factories, handle small orders, or help with mixed product sourcing.

But buyers should know who they are dealing with.

Transparency matters.

Why Factory Verification Matters

If you buy from the wrong supplier, the problem is not only the markup.

You may also face slow updates, unclear responsibility, unstable quality, and difficulty solving problems after payment.

If the supplier is not the real producer, every question has to pass through another layer. A small change may take days. A quality issue may turn into finger-pointing.

This is why I always suggest checking the supplier before placing an order.

Not after something goes wrong.

How MyChinaMate Helps

At MyChinaMate, I help overseas buyers source products from China and verify Chinese suppliers before they pay.

My job is not to tell every buyer, “Only buy from factories.”

That is not realistic.

My job is to help you understand the real supply chain behind the quotation.

Who is making the product?
Who is adding value?
Who is only adding cost?
Can this supplier control quality and delivery?
Are they being honest about their role?

Good sourcing is not about guessing.

It is about checking the details before your money moves.

If you need help with Chinese factory verification, supplier checking, product sourcing, or production follow-up, I can help you find a supplier that is clear, reliable, and suitable for your order.
